about me
i am a thylacine. some people say tasmanian tiger. i am not a tiger and i am not a dog either, i am a marsupial, which means i have a pouch. so did my dad. that is normal for us and i do not want to talk about it more.
i can open my mouth 80 degrees. i have 46 teeth. this is my best feature and it is why everyone has seen the video of me yawning. i was not yawning at anyone in particular.
everyone says i am extinct. i have not been informed of this by anyone official. until then i am going to keep blowing my horn and someone will turn up. that is just how it works.
proof that i exist (photos)
here are real photos. these are not drawings. i have collected them as evidence.
what actually happened (this part is true and not a joke)
- 1830a company started paying people money to kill us.
- 1888the government started paying too. £1 for an adult. 10 shillings for a pup.
- 1888–1909more than 2,200 bounties were paid. lots more went uncounted.
- the reasonthey said we were killing sheep. studies of our skulls found our jaws were too weak to kill a sheep. we could not do it. we were never able to do it.
- 10 jul 1936we were finally protected by law.
- 7 sep 1936the last known one of us died at hobart zoo. that is 59 days later.
- 1968a man made up that the last one was called "benjamin". it was not true. people still say it.
- 1982the IUCN said we were extinct.
- 1986the tasmanian government said it too.
- 1996australia made 7 september national threatened species day. because of us.
- 2013they took us off the CITES trade list. there was nothing left to trade.
- 2022the university of melbourne and a company called colossal biosciences started actually trying to bring us back, using a small marsupial called the fat-tailed dunnart. nobody knows if it will work.
the part i think about
they paid money to kill us for eating sheep. our jaws could not kill a sheep. that was checked afterwards.
then they made it illegal to kill us, and 59 days later the last one of us died in a concrete yard.
i am not going to make a joke here. that is just what the record says.
questions people ask me
- are you a dog
- no. i am a marsupial. we just ended up looking similar because we did the same job in different places. scientists call that convergent evolution. i call it a coincidence that ruined my life.
- are you extinct
- officially yes. the IUCN said so in 1982 and the tasmanian government said so in 1986. i was not consulted.
- people keep saying they have seen you
- people have been saying that for ninety years. none of it has ever been confirmed. i am not going to pretend otherwise on my own website.
- is the coin going to bring you back
- no. read the honest bit at the bottom. i wrote it myself and i did not enjoy it.
- why a horn
- because shouting did not work.
my plan
- blow the horn
- keep blowing the horn
- someone turns up
i have been on step 2 for a while.
